What is the Sci-Tech game club?
The Sci-Tech Game Club is an opportunity for us all to reflect and learn about a different game each month. It’s a game club where you become a member just by tuning in! Every month, we’ll select a game for the club to focus on.
Each month, there will be two different events, each geared towards different Sci-Tech audiences!
The monthly ALUMNI HANGOUT will be held on our Alumni Discord and will be available to any staff and camper alumni who are high school graduates or 18+ who have joined the Discord! During this alumni hangout, folks can watch, comment, or play along/with Game Club hosts Troy and Isaac (and sometimes Jayme) as we play that month’s game! Are you a camper or staff alumni 18 years or older who want to join the Alumni Discord? Submit your request to join here!
The TWITCH DEBATE is a monthly live discussion of that month’s game, hosted by Director Jayme Dale and Game Club Leaders Isaac and Troy! Each month, we’ll see how that month’s game shapes up when seen through the lens of our Sci-Tech Values game rubric! Join our Game Club hosts on Twitch as they debate all 6 points and add some points of your own in the chat! There will be a recording of Twitch events available to folks who aren’t able to make the live events!
What games will you be picking?
We’ll aim to choose a wide variety of games, so we’re hoping to have something for everyone! Each game will have a different rating, so parents or guardians should check to ensure it’s appropriate for their child before purchasing! We’ll always give a heads-up about the rating before we begin the public Twitch Debate!
Who is the game club for?
Everyone! The games and streams are open to everyone whether they’re campers, staff, camper or staff alum, or community members who have never been to camp before but love the idea of playing or thinking about games through a Jewish-values lens! You don’t even have to play the game to be a member! Sometimes the best part of gaming culture is just talking about games, even if you haven’t played them yourself yet.
Why does Sci-Tech have a Game Club?
We believe community is the soul of games, and there’s no better group of people to talk games with than all of you! Games, whether they be tabletop, board, or video, are a huge way for our campers and staff to find kesher (connection) at camp. We want to bring the wisdom and insight our community has during the summer to our year-round lives, and a game club is the perfect way for us to practice #LivingOur6 when we’re not together at camp!
What's the focus of the Twitch Debates?
We’ll be focusing on our core Sci-Tech values, of course! We will #LiveOur6 and analyze the game through a Sci-Tech lens. We’ll have six different criteria that we’ll rate the game on, one for each of our values. We’ll rate the game on a scale of 0 to 6 for each value, with 0 being the lowest and 6 being the highest. There are many different ways to use a value as a lens! Below are some examples of ways we’ve thought about the values in the past:
How well does the game…
- Help you succeed? (Kavod/Respect)
- Help you build relationships with others/yourself? (Kesher/Connection)
- Encourage you to take your time? (Savlanut/Patience)
- Allow for exploration and experimentation? (Sakranut/Curiosity)
- Support discovery of new game mechanics or experiences? (Taglit/Discovery)
- Stand out to you personally? Did you like it?! (Our unique 6th value!)
Do I need to register for the game club?
Nope! No registration is required. You can participate in game club activities as much or as little as you would like or have time for.
How will I know what games are coming up?
You can find the full game club calendar on our game club page at www.6PointsSciTech.org/gameclub/. We’ll also post updates regularly on our Instagram and Facebook. If you follow us on Twitch, you’ll also get updates whenever we go live!
You can also add the Sci-Tech Game Club schedule to your Google Calendar to make sure you don’t forget! Have an iPhone? Don’t use Google Calendar? You can use this iCal link instead!
Who are the game club facilitators?
The three primary facilitators of the game club are Troy Mundschenk (Sci-Tech Game Design Instructor and Professional Game Developer), Isaac Berman (Sci-Tech Staff Alum, Camper Alum, and Professional Game Developer), and Jayme Dale Mallindine (Sci-Tech Director)! We’ll also have guest appearances on our Twitch stream!
