The excitement of Session 2 is in the air! Opening day is underway! With drop-off complete campers are busy unpacking, getting to know their bunks, and rotating through an afternoon filled with activities that will culminate in the much-anticipated official opening ceremony in the air-conditioned PAC (performing arts center).
During opening day your camper will say goodbye to you, and hello to their new bunk. It’s an exciting day filled with ample time for unpacking, dorm bonding and getting acclimated to camp life. After your camper gives you that final hug goodbye and you drive out of Gov’s Academy it might be the first time you have two weeks without your camper, or you might be a seasoned professional. I asked caregivers what they do right after drop-off and got some great tips.
“I immediately drive to the post office and mail my camper her first letter,” said Lisa Gottman, who is a seasoned camp parents and Sci-Tech community care specialist. “I love that I can electronically send the e-letters through Campanion and my child will get it the next day, however there is something nice about getting traditional mail as well.”
“We head to our favorite local ice cream spot, Hodgies Too. They have so many flavors and their generous scoops last us all the way back home,” said one couple I caught up with quickly in the carline at first session.
“This is our grandchild’s first year at Sci-Tech and our first time in Newburyport. We are going to stay in the area overnight and visit the beach,” said a set of grandparents I also met in the car-line.
While saying goodbye to loved ones for a couple of weeks can be hard, the exciting activities the campers (and caregivers) can look forward to after that final hug can help turn a hard goodbye into a cheerful, “See You Soon”.
