URJ 6 Points Sci-Tech Academy East has an official game-streaming channel on Twitch! Every Wednesday at 4:00 PM and every Sunday at 1:30 PM ET at www.Twitch.yv/6PointsSciTechEast/! All are welcome!
On Twitch you’ll be able to watch our streamers, all volunteers or summer leadership team members, play video games while providing fun and thoughtful commentary on the world’s most popular place to watch and broadcast video games… Twitch!
While Twitch and video game streaming is an incredibly popular pastime, we know that some families might not be familiar with this platform yet. See below for a brief description of Twitch and the way we are using this new media platform:
What is Twitch?
Twitch is a platform that lets you watch other people play video games with your internet friends. You can watch Twitch on the web, as well as on streaming devices such as Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Chromecast, game consoles including Xbox and PlayStation, and just about any iOS or Android device. If you create a Twitch account, you can also participate in the group chat with other folks watching the stream!
Game streaming happens live (just like Zoom) so you are only able to participate in the group chat while the stream is happening. However, there are recordings of the stream that will stay on Twitch for a couple of weeks after the stream.
If your camper is already into Twitch or game streaming, they are not alone. The service boasts 100 million monthly viewers, with more than 1 million broadcasters that entertain audiences with their live gaming shows every day!
At Sci-Tech, we are always thinking of how to better #LiveOur6. We’re always looking for new ways to live and explore with our Jewish values in mind and, more specifically, with our Core Values: Kavod (Respect), Sakranut (Curiosity), Taglit (Discovery), Kesher (Connection), Savlanut (Patience), and the 6th unique value that every individual brings to our community! Streaming video games is not only a fun new way to engage our community but also a way for us to further experiment with what it means to #LiveOur6 when it comes to one of our favorite hobbies, video games! Our streamers will be reflecting on our core Jewish values while they play and encouraging everyone watching the stream to reflect and think on these values too!
Is Twitch Free?
It will not cost you a thing to watch Twitch! If your family wants to participate in the group chat, you must make an account (which is also free)!
Is Twitch Kid-Friendly?
Our channel will only be playing games that are rated Everyone 10+ by the ESRB. Additionally, we have a strict moderation policy to make sure the group chat stays camp appropriate. Our game streamers always stream with a live human moderator, so there will always be another adult present (in addition to the streamer) to keep the chat friendly, fun, and appropriate. We also use a system provided by Twitch that filters the chat stream for bad language and other camp inappropriate words, blocking those words before they are used.
However, like Facebook and Instagram, Twitch is a public platform where there are other channels not run by Sci-Tech. This means all campers (including those 13 and older who can have their own Twitch accounts) should only watch Twitch under adult supervision. While there are plenty of kid-friendly channels on Twitch, there are also other streamers that play games rated for teens or adults that do not have the same chat moderation rules as we do. And just like Facebook and Instagram, Twitch is a public platform that is visible to people outside of our camp community. Families and campers should follow the same internet-safety practices they use for Instagram and Facebook and SHOULD NOT share any private information while online including their full name, their address, their contact information, or any other private information.
